GCS was chosen to develop, manufacture and install composite modifications for two Edge 540 aircraft to be used in the 2009 Red Bull Air Race World Championship.
GCS undertook a full modification programme on Team 45’s Edge 540, being flown by Glen Dell. These modifications included the full stripping down of the airframe and the wings, manufacture of more aerodynamically efficient composite components including cowls, turtledeck, wheel spats and landing gear socks. Two sets of modified wing tips were also manufactured.
The Edge 540 underwent an extensive weight reduction programme and every excess gram of weight was removed from the plane which meant the existing paint scheme was stripped, wings re-profiled and a new lightweight paint scheme applied.
New avionics were installed and the plane fully re-assembled. The end result is a stunning Red Bull Racer that is one of the most competitive aircraft available in the 2009 World Championship.
GCS also manufactured the composite components for the current Red Bull World Champion, Hannes Arch, which were used to modify his race plane. GCS Media |
